Tips for making your own dog treats

While I have you here, I thought this would be a great place to share some of my favorite tips for making your own dog treats! As you check out our dog food videos & recipes, you’ll notice that I give some of these words of advice quite often. Here they are all in one spot!

  • Don’t stress! First and foremost, don’t stress out over making the perfect treat. I’ve never been much of a culinary master in the kitchen. Making treats for my dog is a great way for me to practice on someone who doesn’t mind if I overestimate a “pinch” or use the wrong sized eggs! Dogs are so much more forgiving than people!
  • Get yourself a good airtight container: Unless you plan to feed Fido all his treats at once (don’t do this!), you’ll need a good airtight container to store the treats. This can be something as simple as a Tupperwarecontainer or as fancy as a personalized treat jar.
  • Use metal or ceramic bowls when possible: Let’s be honest, some of the stuff that goes into dog food and treats can be kind of stinky! If you’re using plastic, some of those odors can seep in and be hard to remove. Metal bowls are my favorite, but a good ceramic bowl should wash nicely too. Otherwise, keep a separate set of mixing bowls for your pup’s treats!
  • Switch up the flour:A lot of our recipes call for either white or whole wheat flour. If your pooch has allergies to grains, you can usually swap that out for a different type of flour. My top choice is coconut based, but almond meal also works well.
  • Use caution with certain ingredients:You’ll note that ingredients like honey and peanut butter often play a starring role in our dog food videos. Both are fine for dogs with certain stipulations. When buying honey, you want to make sure it isn’t sourced from bees that pollinated oleander. It’s rare, but it does exist. With peanut butter, skip the brands that use xylitol to sweeten their spread. Again, it’s rare. As of now, there are only a handful of brands that do it and none of them are the larger mass-retail companies. Xylitol is deadly to dogs, though, so it’s super important that you choose wisely.
