Krishna Janmasthami festival is also known as Gokulashtami, Krishna Jayanthi in different parts of India. The birthday of Lord Krishna is celebrated with devotion and enthusiasm all over India.
The actual celebration of Janmashtami takes place at midnight as Sri Krishna believed to be born. This day is celebrated with devotional songs (bhajans), pooja, arti, rocking the cradle of baby Shri Krishna. Also, on this day devotees observe fast, prepare bhog (prasad) to offer Shri Krishna and break their fast at midnight.
So here I am sharing few Janmashtami recipes includes prasad ideas and fast (vrat) recipes.

Janmashtami Prasad Recipes
- Milk, Makhan (white butter) products are baby Shri Krishna’s favorite food. So the sweets made from milk, yogurt are offered to him as a prasad and then distributed among the devotees.
- Mishari Makhan: This one is his most favorite. Makhan (white butter) is made by whipping the malai (cream) till butter is separated. The buttermilk is drained. Mishri is mixed with makhan. Mishri (khadi sakar) is called rock candy in English.
- Dhaniya Panjiri: Roast the ½ cup of fresh coarsely ground coriander powder in 1-2 tablespoons of ghee. Let it cool down, then mix in ¼ cup powdered sugar, chopped almonds, cashews, and raisins. Many likes to add desiccated coconut too.
- Panchamrut recipe: It is a must item in your pooja thali.
- Other than above two prasad, fruits and few sweets (like peda, kalakand, shrikhand) are also offered to him.

Sabudana Vada Recipe
The BEST, perfectly fried and crispy sabudana vada recipe ever! These are the perfect snack for vrat (Hindu fasting).
Farali Batata Vada (Farali Recipes)

QUICK snack or breakfast made from sabudana, cucumber, coconut and few fruits. This is a very filling snack or meal during vrat.
Sama Ke Chawal Ki Tikki Recipe
It is crispy from the outside while soft from the inside. Serve hot with phalahari chutney.
10 Fasting Meals (Main Course)
- Rajgira paratha with vrat ke aloo - A soft paratha made from amaranth flour and boiled mashed potato. Then it is served with vrat ki aloo sabzi.
- Sabudana thalipeeth - This thalipeeth is made from soaked tapioca pearls, boiled, mashed potatoes, peanuts, green chilies and cilantro. You can have with farali chutney.
- Sabudana khichdi with rajgira kadhi - The popular, traditional tapioca pearl khichdi tastes best when served with easy, mild rajgira kadhi.
- Rajgira puri with farali sukhi bhaji - The puffed amaranth flour puri is served with Gujarati style dry potato sabzi. This sabzi is flavored with peanuts and dry coconut.
- Moraiyo khichdi with singhare ki kadhi - The khichdi is made with barnyard millets and goes really well with kadhi made from water chestnut flour.
- Sabudana dosa with farali coconut chutney - Let’s make south Indian food as fasting food. The dosa batter is made from soaked tapioca paste. And it is served with farali coconut chutney.
- Dahi aloo with singhare ki poori - Vratwale dahi aloo goes well with puffed puris made from singhare ka atta (water chestnut flour).
- Dahi arbi with kuttu ki poori - Boiled taro roots are simmered into yogurt gravy and this is served with kuttu ki puri. Kuttu atta tends to generate heat in the body, so it is served with cooling dishes like yogurt based dishes.
- Kuttu ka paratha with suran ki sabzi - The paratha made from kuttu atta are served with dahi suran sabzi (elephant foot yam sabji).
- Dahi sabudana with sukhi arbi - tapioca pearls are soaked and cooked into thin yogurt gravy. For some crunch have some sukhi arbi on the side.
10 Janmashtami Special Desserts
During the Hindi fasting, few flours and a handful of veggies are allowed. Plus, you can have any fruit and dairy products. So keeping these in mind, here are 10 different desserts including kheer, halwa, ladoo as Janmashtami recipes.
Rajgira Sheera (Halwa)
Rajgira sheera or Rajgira halwa - a sweet dish made from amaranth flour, sugar, and milk. It is flavored with cardamom powder and garnished with chopped almonds.
Singhare Ka Halwa Recipe
Singhare ka halwa is made with singhare ka aata (water chestnut flour), ghee (clarified butter) and sugar.
Vrat Ke Chawal Ki Kheer (Samvat Rice Kheer)
It is made from barnyard millets, milk and sugar. For the flavoring cardamom powder and saffron is added.
Lauki Ki Kheer (Dudhi Kheer)
